@Simon this is true, but more than 10 million people watch X Factor every week, if only a quarter of them buy the single it will probably be enough. And what’s to say every one of the 550,000 will definitely buy the RATM song.

So Simon cowell says it’s an attack on his “his” artists that  people  might actually buy rage against the machine records.

Here are my outlying arguments for this.

My question is

Will people actually do it?

The principal behind x factor is to take 1 marketable product, or   star, and I use the term loosely, and turn them into a household   name. Which they already are before the show even ends.

With physical “legal” record sales being at an all time low, this   doest mean shit.

Let’s be honest, to get a number one record right now you have to   sell 10,000 ish records.

In 1997, blur and oasis, sold almost 350,000 records EACH and oasis   got number one because the reseller dropped the trade price for   stores who sold the cd for 2quid less than blur, this attracted the   kid audience who have a pound in their pocket.

Something else to consider is the distribution of this track. You   have your usual channels, hmv etc but the majority of other music   sellers, tescos etc will never and I repeat never stock something  as  risky as a rage against the machine cd SINGLE and these  supermarkets  make up around 30% of all chart ALBUM sales. They  don’t even take  singles seriously, but I they will have the x  factor release(es)

iTunes and hmv are going to be rage against the machines ONLY   outlets, but don’t forget the good old independent stores I hear  you  say…. Yeah right!

Even petrol stations will be selling xfactor…

Of the 500,000 people they want to “join this group” I suspect;
250,000 already have the track, because the group is being targeted   at “individuals” then theres another
125,000 who will “forget”
65,000 who actually don’t care and just join social networking groups.

So you’re down to 65k 1in6 will actually buy the song.

Total sales 6,500

Xfactor… Average viewers 14MILLION

Even the BBC has given up competing with it…

They even cancelled top gear next Sunday to avoid clashing with the  final

They know that there will be 20million plus watching that show

So let’s apply the same ratio.

That’s 200,000 records

if it sells that many I’ll be surprised, but with 30 times more   potential sales rage against the machine have no chance.
