Slayer’s Tom Araya On Retirement Rumours: “We Don’t Know Yet”

The Guardian spoke to Slayer frontman Tom Araya and guitarist Kerry King about rumours that the band were going to reitre…
Tom Araya spoke about the whether there is any truth to the rumors that Slayer is planning on retiring soon:
“We don’t know yet. I know this much: being away from your family so much doesn’t get any easier. I’ve been married for 15 years. I have a 13-year-old daughter and a 10-year-old son and I want to make up for the all the time I wasn’t there. I have nieces and nephews I’ve barely seen. This life demands so much of you, personally and physically. I honestly don’t know how I did the first 15 years of SLAYER. How did I get so fucking wasted then play every fucking night? Then, immediately after playing, do it all over again. How the fuck did we all do that?”

Brutal.
I read world painted blood would be one of three albums they would record before giving it a rest in 2012.
Its really sad to think that all my hero’s will be throwing in the towel in the next 5 years or so.
I can’t imagine Maiden going for much longer after the next album, same with metallica, AC/DC, megadeth, Ozzy…
We’ll only have the shit generation of metal bands left. Trivium and all that rubbish. I have yet to find a new band that capture the same magic that those bands did in the early days and do now.
Why wasn’t i born in the 70’s!?!!
I don’t think that Metal will be shit in the future. Admittedly some less than awesome bands may become popular, but it means that all the amazing bands who are partly ignored or passed by for these ‘bigger’ bands will have a better chance of major success. Mastodon? Iced Earth? Amon Amarth? There’s no reason any of these or similiar bands couldn’t hit the top flight.
It will indeed be a sad day when there is no more Maiden, Ozzy, et al.
Looks like my band, and the thousands of others all over the world will have to work extra hard, and create something extra special to give the kids of tomorrow something to look forward to.
Maiden and Megadeth have only got a few years of life left. Slayer are going to go out with something close to a bang sometime soon. Anthrax – well, I’m surprised they haven’t called it a day yet. Pantera is already dead and buried. Death, Nirvana and At the Gates are long gone. Helloween don’t seem to have as much life as they did.
However, for all that we’ll still have Judas Priest, Airbourne, Dark Tranquillity, Metallica, and the New Wave of Thrash. Not to mention hundreds of underground DM bands, a revitalised Stratovarius and bands liek Amon Amarth thatycan still put on one hell of a live show. The old giants may be going or gone, but the future of mertal’s in good hands (as long as Steel Panther commit suicide sometimes soon and Fred Durst finally realises Limp Bizkit is, in fact, bollocks).
I have to admit, it’s a scary thought that all the ‘classic’ metal bands of the 70s and 80s probably don’t have much juice left in them and will be ending soon.
But hey, if new bands today have found inspiration in bands and artists from as far back said decades, then what’s to say further generations won’t either?
Trust me, these bands may be gone soon, but I seriously doubt they’ll be forgotten in years to come
Christ, and I haven’t even seen them live yet.
plent of bands from the 60’s have continued playing into their 60’s and are still big acts; So it seems weird tht so many 80’s bands are considering retirement
I really fear for metal once the big guns (Maiden, Metallica, AC/DC, Megadeth et al) are gone. I remember when Mastodon released Leviathan, Kerrang were proclaiming them the best band on the planet?! I bought the album and have seen them twice. They’re a good band, nothing more. Trivium are OK and there are a few decent thrash bands emerging, but you will NEVER see a metal band achieve the status of Maiden or Metallica.
Sniff sniff….. stop talking about all my favourite bands retiring (sniff)……you’re all upsetting me (sniff). They will never quit. Sniff sniff……(!!!) However, with the likes of Cauldron, Arch Enemy, Municipal Waste, Amon Amarth, Dragonforce, Mastodon, Airbourne etc metals future looks bright!
The new album was pretty shoddy anyway. Not saying I’m glad they’ll be gone or anything, but they haven’t made anything good for a long time.
I don’t know who’ll be the next Slayer or Megadeth, but I hope to God it’s not Dragonforce.
Metallica,Slayer,Pantera,Sepultura,Iron Maiden,Judas Priest, and a few more bands were pretty much the reason I became a metal fan.now they lives are reaching their end (if not already).it’s so sad.I tried to like new metal bands,I really did,but sadly they just can’t deliver.there are some bands that are okay, but ususalyy hit and miss.it’s sad because metal is fadding into some teenager-ish era of everybody’s life.
Greg – 2 words:
Machine Head
It will be sad to see some of the old bands go, although i hate to say it, madien and metallica, arugabley he two best selling/largest fan base bands have not really released any AMAZING material for a long time.
However, i am sure many younger bands will fill the boots of these bands. Machine Head, Lamb of God, Amon Amarth, Five Finger Death Punch and Devildriver, to mention just a few, will keep us satisfied for many years!
@Fred: Yeah pretty much. Them, LOG, Devildriver and Mastodon.
Fred…
3 Words…
Machine Fucking Head!!
just dont cancel the tour !
The void will be filled for a few years… by no other tan MACHINEHEAD !!!
If they plan to stop,….the world needs a new plan to survive…
The Guardian…WTF :s
dose anybody reckon that tom asks fans to kirb their language around the kids or dos he not mind folks screaming FUCKING SSSSLLLLLLLLLLLLAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEERRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think out of the big 4 it’ll be Metallica and Megadeth at the end. Metallica are the biggest so naturally they could continue the longest but Mustaine will probably try to outlast them to prove a point.
I’m 19 and I still have a few legends to see, I’m hoping I wasn’t born too late to catch them all.
P.S. Have heard the SLAYER album all the way through and is a must buy. At first it’s OK but it grows day by day. Play it LOUD for the best results when your driving or doing something, rather than trying to find another raining blood and you’ll appreciate it much much more.
Long live metal!
Oh fuck off Ollie, we know this and Trivium aren’t shit.
Completely agree with Rod and staying on the topic of new albums Endgame is fucking brilliant, which means that both Slayer and Megadeth have some good stuff left in them, at least for now. ‘Tallica should just pack up and go after their abysmal “Death Magnetic” and I really do not have a clue as to what’s happening with Anthrax.
Maiden will probably do one more album and one more tour, which I shall endeavour to get to.
Regarding the future of metal, we do have some brilliant bands LoG, MfH and DevilDriver namely will carry the burning torch. No need to get all upset.
i think that the big four should all do a world tour and all the bands should mix to gether and play songs together imagine that
but i will be sad to hear that slayer are going to throw in the towel
but at least i am going to see them at rock city wich will be brill!
no slayer no maiden no ozzy….blah blah blah…lets not think about it and enjoy these guys while they still makin great music….am startin at the barras 22nd nov SLAYER
Who cares?! None of these bands are doing anything significant apart from slayer and the beauty of it all is, their cds are still around!!! Plus, between the ‘Big four’ plus maiden, i have seen them, fuck me, 22 times actually. Jesus. I was thinking about 15 but i have seen slayer 10 times after all. So, all you morons who want to say i know nothing can fuck off. I have known enough to know these bands were worth seeing as many times as possible. Slipknot, LOG, MfH, Mastodon, Chimaira, Killswitch and unearth. Who the fuck said there is no good fucking metal left? Plus, there are so many more i cant even think of right now. And besides, if one or two of these bands retire now, at least they’ll have SOME credibility left. Although i am not talking about Slayer. They will ALWAYS kick major fucking ass even if they reform for the zimmerframe tour in 20 years!
Yes it´s a shame that some of the most classic metal bands will retire soon, but the future of metal looks bright thanks to bands like Lamb of God, Amon Amarth, Arch Enemy, Children Of Bodom, Stratovarius (their new line up is fuckin awesome), Mastodon, Devildriver, Municipal Waste, Warbringer, Opeth, etc. I know that there are some crappy bands out there, but there have been crappy bands. Maybe Araya will retire but I think that Hanneman, King and Lombardo will be in metal for a long time and Megadeth, with their new line up, as well.
