How Slipknot Changed Corey Taylor’s Life… Before He Joined
You won’t be surprised to hear Corey Taylor admitting that Slipknot changed his life – but you might be surprised to hear it happened before he was in the band.
The moment took place in 1995, before he was invited to become their frontman, and while he was in the middle of his first stint with Stone Sour.
Asked about live shows that blew him away, Taylor tells Noisecreep: “The first one, I would have to say, was the Metallica tour that they did for the album …And Justice for All, with Megadeth and Alice in Chains also on the bill.
“As iconic a band as Metallica has become, I think sometimes we forget just how raw they were in the beginning of their career. To a 15-year-old kid like me, it was just shattering.
“But there’s another show that I think had the biggest impact on my life – and it’s something that very few people get to experience.
“I went to see a Slipknot show in Iowa. Stone Sour was playing the next night and so we went to see Slipknot. I never really had that kind of feeling before, of seeing a band with that kind of energy. They just marched up through the crowd – and I said to myself, ‘That’s the band that I want to sing in.’”
He achieved his ambition in 1997, and despite having fronted Slipknot ever since, his feelings remain like they did that day.
“How many people get to go see a band that’s like their favourite band in the world, and then soon after that they find themselves being the lead singer?” he asks. “It’s the fucking coolest thing in the world.
“I’m still a fan of the band from when I saw them back then, and just look at what happened. I’m telling you, man, fucking unbelievable.”
Stone Sour’s new album House Of Gold And Bones Part 2 is released today. Hammer offered a free download of one track, Gravesend, last week. See them at this year’s Download Festival on June 16, as part of a European tour.
