The Best Things About The (Metal) 90s

jamesgill / Lists, News / 08/07/2009 10:00am

slash90I (Gill) asked Caren (Hammer’s dep ed) and Vanessa (Hammer’s production ed) to compile a list of the 10 best things about the (metal) 90s…

First Vanessa emailed me hers:
1) Seeing Guns N’ Roses in 1992 before they totally sucked. With Soundgarden and Faith No More in support too. Yes.
2) Seeing Marilyn Manson in 1996 before he totally sucked.
3) Hearing Nine Inch Nails’ ‘Pretty Hate Machine’ for the first time. Still my favourite album ever.
4) Pantera. Just… Pantera (RIP Dime. You’ll always be the man).
5) Seeing Sepultura – with Max – at the tiny LA2 club in London, 1996. Front row. Caught Andreas’s pick. Awesome gig. Worth queuing 14 hours.
6) Seeing Metallica at the LA2 in 1995. Squeee!
7) White Zombie albums and gigs. Stop making movies and play the UK, Rob, you selfish git!
8) Machine Head’s ‘Burn My Eyes’. Man, I still remember hearing it for the first time. Mindblowing.
9) Skid Row. Gigs, ‘Slave To The Grind’, Seb mouthing off on ‘Noisy Mothers’/‘Headbangers Ball’/etc. Everything about Skid Row ruled in the 90s.
10) ‘Demanufacture’. Just… ‘Demanufacture’. Come on Fear Factory, bury the hatchet and come play for us.
On opening Caren’s email to see her nine things, she had simply written “fuck you Vanessa, what am I supposed to write now?”

But then - very kindly – emailed me the below list (phew)

1) Seeing Pantera, before they sucked
2) Seeing Metallica, before they sucked
3) Seeing Megadeth, before they sucked
4) Seeing Slayer, before they sucked
5) Seeing Manson, before they sucked
6) Seeing Sepultura, before they sucked
7) Seeing White Zombie, before they split
8) Seeing Soundgarden, before they split
9) Seeing Kyuss, before they split
10) Seeing Faith No More, before they split
11) Seeing Alice In Chains, before Layne died

Not quite what I had in mind, but, well…

NB: You may note that has Caren has written 11. This is why we’re not accountants.

And now they’re shouting about adding “Meeting Aerosmith at Monsters Of Rock in 1994 and Bill & Ted and Wayne’s World movies at the cinema!”… Me and my big mouth.

Let us know YOUR best things about the 90s and we will compile a definitive list! Email me james.gill@futurenet.co.uk

fuck NIN they fucking suck
and fuck guns n roses they suck even more

Need to correct you list there a bit:

Pantera never sucked, ever…
Megadeth rulez, well they consistently better then Metallica and thats what counts…

Caren Gibson

Klunk, did you not see Pantera at Brixton Academy in 2000? They sucked…

For the 90s eh? Ok…hearing Metallica for the first time when 12 and getting into all sorts of metal.

Nuff said.

Kris Dobo

Nothing about the rise of the second wave of black metal? Plus Pantera have always been shit, an in the early 90’s they werent that popular, it wasnt till Dime died all these kids worship him.

Kris, you havent got a clue dude. You obviously werent into metal then. Or you were in nappies!! I was there and Pantera were HUGE among metalheads. And still are. Have been listening to em for 15 or 16 years now and will continue to do so til i die!!

My best memories of the 90’s was still having hair (bloody long too) and not having this beer gut…

MetalRich

Err – if you heard Pretty Hate Machine when it was released, then that was actually in the 1980s. Yes, I am a pedant.

JASON CRAIG

Kris, the (early to mid) 90,s was pretty devoid metal and Pantera were one of the few metal bands to flourish in that time they flew the flag for metal, and thats fuck all to do with Dimes death either, Plus Black Metal needed a second wave, because the first wave was shit.

pantera, slayer & megadeth never sucked!

Caren Gibson

Julius: I refer you to my earlier comment re: Pantera. Slayer: Undisputed Attitude onwards (never live though). Megadeth: Risk.

tadhg o loughlan

what about seeing korn before they started to suck??
or rage against the machine before they sold out??

even if a band puts out a bad album that doesnt mean they suck.. remember ST ANGER??

Megadeth were always awesome. Risk isn’t even that bad an album it definitely wasn’t Rust in Peace but it wasn’t St. Anger either.

Kris Dobo

JASON CRAIG – Are you high? The first wave of black metal is amazing! Venom, Bathory, Vulcano, Sarcófago, Bulldozer. You saying these band are shit? If so stop listening to metal.

TrendkillTimmy

Kris, don’t tell someone to stop listening to metal when you yourself are, A) uninformed and not quite the metal expert and, B) possibly tone deaf

Steamboat

The 90s were hardly a great decade for Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer.

The worst of the 90s: ‘Reload’, ‘Risk’, and ‘Diabolus in Musica’.

The worst of the 00s: ‘St. Anger’, ‘The System Has Failed’ and ‘Christ Illusion’.

I know which decade I would choose.

Altogether now…INSOMNI-OMNI-OMNI-OMNI-OMNI-OMNIA!

For me the highlights of the 90s were everything Sepultura, everything Pantera, everything Fear Factory, Deftones inventing their own genre and Rage Against the Machine.

i thought diabolus in musica was pretty good “point” is 1 hell of a album closer!

pantera were deffo the best thing about 90s metal, and pearl jam was the best thing to happen in music alltogether in the 90s.
and why would we need 2 waves of black metal? black metal sucks ass, the only thing gayer than the music are the people

Steamboat

I like ‘Diabolus in Musica’ too. The opening riff on ‘Bitter Peace’ is awesome!

However, a lot of people thought it was crap and that Slayer had gone ‘nu-metal’ by downtuning their guitars and apparently stealing riffs from the preeminent shit peddlers of the day, Coal Chamber. My point being that Slayer’s worst of this decade is better than the worst of the 90s hence PROVING that Slayer do not suck now.

I’m just trying to illustrate that number 4 on Caren Gibson’s list seems unfair. Slayer have always nailed it live but albums wise, the 90s was hardly a golden age with the exception of ‘Dittohead’ and top 5 metal album of all time, ‘Seasons in the Abyss’.

PANTERA ruled the fucking ’90s. And they NEVER sucked! Whoever thinks so is a fucking retard and a douche bag! Quit your job and kill yourself!

The Beast

That’s what makes this Comment Section interesting, THE BITCHING AND ALL THE WHINING ABOUT WHO SUCKED AND WHO DIDN’T! Great way to start a day! Keep it up!

Nathan Chapman

Haha, the pitiful arguing. Always makes me laugh.

I’m still waiting for an “OMG STFU N00b!!!111″

Ha!

I agree when people say they saw Pantera, before they went bad. That’s the key thing, ’saw’. Live, in the later years, when Phil could barely get his words out, would have have been nothing compared to the old Pantera.

Their music never slowed, but their singer did!

Sam Ellis - Thompson

Pantera never sucked, fucking noobs.

Check it out.

OMG STFU N00b!!!111

lol…

Caren Gibson

Steamboat, Slayer lost it live for me since Lombardo rejoined. That was up until Unholy Alliance last year which was probably the best I’ve ever seen them (20-odd times now). But that’s a moot point. Sucked is probably too harsh a word and shouldn’t be taken at face value since I hacked the list out in 10 seconds and Vanessa took all the best shit. Slayer haven’t been as good live in the 00s as the 90s for me.

For all the people who say Pantera never sucked… you obviously never saw them in 1992/3 compared to 2000… Likewise Megadeth supporting AC/DC in 2001 compared to Hammersmith Odeon (yes that long ago) in 1992.

PabloDiablo

Caren, are you single? Just wonderin cos i could date you and then sacrifice you to Satan for blaspheming the name of Slayer!!! Mwahh ha ha (supposed to be an evil laugh!!)

Nathan Chapman

But are you referring to the performance, or the music?

Steamboat

No love for Lombardo! Fair enough.

Anyhow rather than focussing on what sucked why has no-one mentioned Tool yet?

in my opinion PANTERA NEVER SUCKED!
