This is kinda cool, except I don’t think Metallica will be appearing at Sonisphere again in the UK next year. I think this “Big Four” thing is a little overrated and half baked anyway as Slayer are the only band with their classic line-up in place. Megadeth only has mustaine left.

All others in the band although they might contribute to the songwriting are mostly just told what it is they should be doing. All decisions etc made by those in charge. The Problem is this announcement is 20 years too late to matter. Respect to pioneers/gods of thrash but none of these 4 bands have released a record of significance for over a decade. You can disagree all you want but endgame, world painted.., death magnetic are very competent but non ground breaking and here in my opinion is why this matters..

The world has moved on Pantera took hold of the torch passed it to Slipknot and LOG took it another step. Some ‘old schoolers’ learned to re-invent and keep up i.e. Machine Head and DevilDriver. Lars/Het know this hence the about turn in direction but the Hard Rock is still there and pasting in parts of One is fooling nobody.
The big 4 (or 3 at least) remain excellent technical musicians and we love them for the legacy they created but only the sentimental or those who use highest total record sales to dictate real estate on their iPod will celebrate this potential festival take over.

At least Slayer have never taken the hard rock/mainstream direction to survive.

What is headline criteria anyway.

1. Can’t be too happening coz no-one will come unless headliners have released 3 or more classic albums
2. Have released a true (not sentimental) ‘best album of the year’ contender in last year.
3. Have recent music that continues to push boundaries of metal genre.
4. Have to have been inducted into the Rock and roll hall zimmerframe.

There are other nominees that meet criteria(1-3) When is Download or Sonisphere going to give MachineHead , Lamb Of God, DevilDriver or SoulFly a headlining set.
Why did it take 10 years for Slipknot =because it took them to release the Stone Sour hard rock record . If it ain’t mainstream = no headliner, at least the 9 fought to keep the ballads out of the set.

So we fill the bill with ‘old farts’ and ‘quick buck’just reformed for festival season. All that happens is more happening bands Gojira, Unearth, Ektomorf… or undervalued movers like Opeth get squeezed to the bottom billing/other stages.
I thought the XFactor was killing music at least Download has a good freakshow.

Darren Jones – Metallica are still brilliant live, so you’re talking out of your arse, sorry. I’ve seen them as many times as you within the last 15 years and they still blow me away with their energy, presence and interaction. I’ve seen Slayer about 10 times live and they’re shite. They just stand there! They may give a solid musical performance but they don’t actually perform in the broader sense of the word.

SoulflyCavalera – the reason they don’t give te headline slot to soulfly or devildriver, or even LoG, is because they’re simply not big enough to headline a festival, like it or not, sales matter and a band that plays venues like the garage and the electric ballroom cannot headline download, it’s simply ridiculous to think they can!

if the big four are at Sonny in the UK I am there… unless Download announces either A:) snatch the big four for their festival OR B:)get the original line up of Gun N Roses to play (stranger things have happened) or C:) do actually have something so awesome that I cant think of it.

As has been mentioned, this is hardly a bonus becuase this is happening in Poland… what should have happened is that Maiden should be doing a proper UK tour and the big four should so Sonisphere here as well as Poland.

Hate to burst all of your bubbles…but Slayer and Anthrax have been confrimed as exclusive to Sonisphere, and therefore there will not be Thrash 4 at download. Also…who is in fucking Poland? Why didn’t they bring it to the flipping UK or US? Would have got a much bigger crowd.

I am thinking this is still the small part of the bigger picture, Poland Sonisphere is the day after download, meaning people who want to see the Thrash 4 at Poland cannot go to download, and that will be a hell of alot of people. Anyway just speculating.

Not in the UK I was so excited until I realised it was only for Poland. A world tour of the Big 4 would still be awesome news, but it is cool that they are actually doing it. UK still has a great line up for Sonisphere 2010 can’t wait. Hope there is a dvd of the Big 4

I just wish there was a bigger metal scene in Australia. Sure it’s big enough once you look around the place, but it’s hardly prominent enough for the big 4 to worry about… but if there were, and I were able to go, this would undoubtedly be one of the greatest nights of my life.

But as long as Metallica come out sooner or later, I’ll have seen the big four by the end of next year.
