The Guardian Praises Metal Hammer

We’re not often made to blush at Hammer towers, but when a broadsheet like The Guardian has some nice things to say about us, we’re allowed to be a little on the flattered side.

The Guardian’s Maggoty Lamb has run his high-brow, critical eye over the last issue of Metal Hammer 189 (Deathstars cover) and given us some glowing praise. Check it out here.

The Guardian can now be considered honorary Defenders Of The Faith. We throw the horns in your general direction!

I wouldn’t get into bed with The Guardian just yet, MH.

I’m a big fan of the paper, as well as The Observer on Sundays, but there is still pleanty of pompous attitude directed towards our scene from them. A case in point being the current week’s editions running a series of suppliments entitled “1000 songs you must hear”. How many tunes from the rock/metal generes do you think have made it so far? And when they do it usually accompanied by a pretty smarmy comment along the lines of “oh, it’s okay to like this one, it’s not embarassing to admit to”. Sabbath’s “War Pigs” was mentioned the other day but implied that this was one of the last good songs released before metal went dumb and moronic. They can be pretty smug when giving live reviews too (though they did give Maiden’s Twickenham event a great thumbs-up).

A great, well-written paper (far better than the tabloid shite) but still along way from being “metal-friendly” I’m afraid.

they may not be completley metal friendly…. but how many other newspapers do you know that have taken the time to review the metal press in general? let alone one of the top broadsheets in the country.

Congrats to MH for the review – you deserve every recognition

Noooo! Don’t feel flattered that this rag has condescended to comment on MH. No fckn way is this bastion of the chattering classes a ‘defender of the faith’. So disappointing that MH feels ‘flattered’ to be ‘accepted’ by the Islington intellgentsia. Shows a disturbing ignorance of what most of the metal community stand for. Bye bye MH.

Be afraid, MH, very afraid. This is another attempt at “know thine enemy”. The metal community and much of its music is critical of the establishment- politics of war, religion etc. ‘Omerta’ is right. The newspaper is the mouthpiece of the politicians and ‘ruling classes’ dressed up as intelligent who are aiming to control every tiny detail of our lives.

Thats one paper down…

They have also defended Black Metal fans after the release of Varg and the fact that some will be tempted to label all BM fans as akin to Varg.
