Maiden, because you get the complete package. No other band puts as much care and attention into each release and tour. With some bands it’s just about the live show, some bands it’s just about the album, but with Maiden it’s the whole deal. They may be multi-million selling, but they’ve never sold out to make a quick buck, it’s all been on their terms and if they play a 250,000 capacity festival or a 5000 Brixton Academy gig, you’ll get 100% Maiden with the same intensity. Still the best band on the planet, end of.

its funny how about half of those bands aren’t even metal bands. got nothing against them but how can anyone say van halen, led zeppelin, kiss, ufo, def leppard and rainbow are metal? hard rock at best, and a lot of that stuff is really commercial.

anyone with half a brain knows an actual metal list should include pantera, megadeth, napalm death etc for their consistently great albums AND for their influence. when u consider how many metal bands have been influenced by the likes of motorhead and celtic frost too it shows how daft these ‘best band ever’ lists are.

i saw something similar on VH1 a few years ago ‘20 best metal videos’ or something, that had pink floyd and bon jovi on it!!!

if they are including 8 or 9 hard rock bands as ‘heavy metal’ then for one thing they missed out thin lizzy, rush, jimi hendrix etc. all more metal and more influential than, say, def leppard. and the other point, why no extreme metal? death, cannibal corpse, carcass, napalm death, morbid angel and others are proper metal bands and massively influential.

The fact that they havent even got Pantera – one of the most influential metal band of the last 20years – shows this list isnt worth diddly squat. Ask 100 metal fans who is better out of Pantera and fucking Rainbow and 99% will say Pantera.

There’s a difference between the thick “heavy metal” sound and the loud “hard rock” sound. Which is why Purple and Led Zepp deserve to be there, though they have very few metal songs.
