We take a closer look at the 4 teams that have made BBC 6 Music’s Heavy Metal World Cup semi-finals!
It’s Slayer vs Iron Maiden and Motorhead vs Sabbath in the semi-finals of the Heavy Metal World Cup, let’s have a look at the teams and their strongest points!
Slayer
Arguably the most metal band of all time. Nothing approaching a ballad, no acoustic guitars, loads of songs about murder, suicide and war and they’ve been one of the heaviest bands in existence since their formation. None more metal? You bet your ass!
Iron Maiden
In terms of epic song-writing, sonic expression and combining heaviness with elaborate songwriting, Iron Maiden remain one of the most important metal acts of all time. Bruce Dickinson’s air-raid siren vocals, that galloping Steve Harris bass guitars and their moaring lead guitars have all been copied but never bettered. The best metal act of all time? They’ve got one hell of a claim.
Motorhead
Without Lemmy’s brigade bringing punk rock pace to heavy metal, we may not have neded up with the Bay Area thrash scene that spawned Metallica and fellow semi-finalists Slayer – that’s how important Motorhead are to the heavy metal landscape. Still one of the loudest bands in the world, Bomber, Ace Of Spades, Overkill and Stone Dead Forever will take some beating to put out of the Heavy Metal World Cup.
Black Sabbath
The band that started everything we know and love, Sabbath are surely the team to beat. Trouncing Metallica in the first round of this competition, to quote Mr Rob Zombie “Black Sabbath are responsible for every cool riff you’ve ever heard”. Can anyone stop the Sabbath juggernaut?

Honestly what are Slayer doing there…they suck…The only thing they can do is play fast but have absolutely no structure or talent to their music..its just shit!!

I really don’t think it was fair to put Metallica against Sabbath as early as they did. Sabbath will always be put before Metallica because they were one half of the creators of heavy metal with Led Zeppelin. I love Metallica and Sabbath, but I think Metallica should have been allowed to at least have a chance to come in second. Sabbath FTW though.
