Underoath On Metallica
“People can say, ‘if it wasn’t for Metallica, you wouldn’t have a scene to play to’, I’ll give them that. I respect them, but I just don’t like them.”
We caught up with Underoath on the road on this year’s Give It A Name festival to talk about the pitfalls of crossing over, their broad range of influences and much, much more.
UNDEROATH
Outside, the scorching Italian cooks the tarmac of the empty venue car park. Someone calls out, ‘kick-ball! Kick-ball out in the parking lot, now!’. The game is basically like rounders only you kick a football, and Taking Back Sunday’s guitarist Eddie Reyes is collecting ‘volunteers’. 20 minutes later 30 or so members of Underoath, Thursday, Taking Back Sunday, Emery and Innerpartysystem are outside kicking, throwing, yelling and exchanging jocular put-downs. We wonder if Eddie sees the irony in his calling Tim a ‘little troll’. It’s all fun and games in the searing heat, but back inside Tim and Hammer pick up the conversation: how seriously the band really take their music, how much it means to them, and subsequently how important it is that it’s not misrepresented or misconstrued.
“There are bands like Cursive and Isis who we love, but who wouldn’t tour with us because of the bands we’re associated with,” he says, stroking his handsome beard. “I do feel like we aren’t accepted in a scene where we have more in common with the bands.”
We put it to Tim that the band have to be more careful than a band who might feature in the latter part of this magazine because their potential to cross-over is so much more.
“That’s just part of our band,” he says frankly. “Our band were doing this before Chiodos. But we don’t have a chip on our shoulder about it. Most of the bands we don’t like can probably run circles round us musically. We just want to be straight-up with what we believe in [musically], and for that reason you have to be defensive about certain categorizations. When people say, ‘You and Chiodos are two of my favourite bands, you should tour together’ I think, ‘we’re not even in the same category’.”
As Tim admits, it’s frustrating being aligned with bands whom you feel you have nothing in common.
“When we write and record we don’t have an idea of what we are going to write – heavy, instrumental, not heavy – we have more of an idea of what we’re not going to write. We basically look around Warped tour or MTV and AP and collect a not-to-do list.”
And while you may think it, they haven’t cut off their nose to spite their face. They have in fact kept not only maintained a stylistic credibility but managed to forge their own distinctive sound. But while imitation is the strongest form of flattery, it’s still annoying when people bite your style.
“We get that question a lot,” says Tim, smiling as he tugs on his beard. “About how singing, screaming bands with keyboards are cool now. Sure we feel that, but five years ago, we had bits that sounded like the bands that inspired us. We didn’t start it though, it would be arrogant to assume that we did. There are screamo bands that have been doing that for years! The chain of inspiration passes on like that.”
We point out that it’s strange that none of the band made any mention of bands within metal like Metallica or Lamb Of God:
“When we were on tour in 2006/7, the tour manager for Anti-Flag was talking to me, and he asked what my favourite Metallica record was. I said I didn’t have one. Not that I liked them all, but I didn’t like any. He was like ‘what?!’ I said I didn’t like them, I didn’t think they were any good. He got really startled then almost offended. He was literally slamming the bar saying, ‘there is no F-ing way you play the music you do, the way you do, and not like Metallica’. I can listen to that stuff, and maybe if I was alive 30 years ago it would mean more to me; I respect them, but I just don’t like them. I get that they’re important, but not to me. For me Kurt Cobain means more: he played like trash but he had an intensity. It’s not about your chops, it’s about creating a feeling. People can say, ‘if it wasn’t for Metallica, you wouldn’t have a scene to play to’, I’ll give them that, but I still don’t like them. Maybe one day I’ll look back, having changed my mind about Metallica, and think what a stupid 25 year old I was.”
The full feature will appear in a future issue of Metal Hammer.

Tbh, I thought this bloke was alright when he was making scathing remarks about people with stupid names who wear makeup and write cheesy false metal (Avenged Sevenfold)
But now he needs to just shut up and kiss James Hetfields hairy Calfornian ass as far as I can see!
Everytime you interview Underoath, I like them even more.
You have to admit Underoath make good points but they might actually be listened to if they didn’t suck themselves
Ha, amazing, you can play emo/metal music and not like that abomination that is metallica. i dont really like underoath but they are right.
I didn’t like Underoath when I first heard their music and every time I hear them interviewed I like them less.
‘It’s not about your chops, it’s about creating a feeling’ he says. What on earth does that mean? That’s meaningless arty twaddle, and I use meaningless literally- it means nothing. ‘Creating a feeling’ is impossible to do, because feeling is down to the listener. Not every Underoath fan will take the same feeling from their songs, in the same way that not every Metallica fan feels the same when they hear Metallica songs. Both bands create the music and the feeling comes from the listener.
Now, if Tim had said ‘I respect Metallica but their music doesn’t do anything for me’, that I could understand. I have massive respect for Iron Maiden and think their music is near-unparallelled, but it doesn’t really do anything for me. I will never, ever say that they aren’t good however, because they’re clearly utterly brilliant- just not really my cup of tea. But he didn’t say that, he said ‘I didn’t think they’re any good’. That’s a different issue- he’s saying that Metallica have written bad music, not just that they’re not to his taste. So all those huge riffs and vocal hooks are bad, are they, Tim? Master Of Puppets is a bad album? One is a bad song? On what basis is that?
If you are going to make a quality judgement on someone else’s music, you should surely be able to justify that, as you aren’t expressing your personal taste you are criticising. What about their music is bad? Had you been able to articulate that, Tim, I might have been willing to listen. But you’ve just written off the biggest metal band in the world as ‘bad’. That’s cheap and disrespectful. Dave Mustaine is quite happy to talk about how he perceives many guitarists today (and in particular their ability to write solos) as bad, but he doesn’t name them. Why? Because it’s not fair to write someone off as bad without saying why when it’s their livelihood, and because he’s learned the hard way what that can do for your reputation. So what makes Tim think he can do it?
I think the whole reason I don’t like Underoath- and many bands in their vein- is that it’s all arty bollocks about ‘feeling’ and ‘intensity’ and equally vacuous comments that are remarkably convenient ways of ignoring criticism. If someone says that this riff or that vocal hook is poor, he can comfort himself with the thought that ‘it’s not about good riffs or hooks, it’s about feeling’. This attitude is what leads to a whole swathe of bands that sound exactly the same and recycle riffs that have been used many times by other bands, and the sort of music that lasts about fifteen minutes in the memory. The really great bands, the bands that last and stand up to repeated listening- including Metallica, of course, but other greats like Slayer, Maiden, Pantera and Machine Head- try to write music that is good AND has intensity AND is played with feeling, but all metal and metalcore bands have intensity- it’s inherent- so the foremost thing is that the music is good. Is ‘Reign In Blood’ such a classic album because of its intensity or because the songs are great AND intense? Is ‘Davidian’ one of the great live songs because it’s intense or because it has great riffs and groove AND is intense?
I think Tim should perhaps grow up a little- if he was fourteen, I might understand his comments. He’s not- he’s twenty-five and a grown-up. A little more depth and insight is expected as a result. Particularly when he’s basically slagging off a band that is many people’s all-time favourite band.
^ in short, the dude (from Underoath) is a douchebag. Metallica can stomp on him
I don’t see why people (like the first guy) are now hating on this guy just because he said he dosn’t like metallica. Alot of people don’t like metallica and everyone is entitled to thier opinion and more so than anyone people who are in the same area of music.(well they are both metal just not the same type). Besides he says he “respects them” despite not liking them so why everyone giving them flak all of a sudden, i guess the obvious reason is big metallica fans are more vocal and critisizing than avenged sevenfold fans, they are almost like the nintendo fans of the music industry, one little word about what they love and they must hate who said it.
…hmmm i went on there
@noobpotato- he didn’t just say he didn’t like Metallica, he said he didn’t think their albums were any good. That’s not a comment about personal taste, it’s about quality- that’s different. And I would have said the same thing if it had been Iron Maiden, who I’m not a fan of, or any other very good band who have been going for years that aren’t really to my taste but are clearly very good.
Well said Repka!
i wish this guy would just shut the fuck up already
Tim’s next interview: ye ye Underoath are crap i hate them so much, they have no musical talent what so ever…… oh wait
If it wasnt for Venom an Mercyful Fate ect there wouldnt be a scene for Metallica. Who gives a fuck. Underoath are shit, Metallica were good.
What a boring b*stard!!! Once you’ve been around for 25+ years and sold a stupid amount of records, then you can have a pop at bands like Metallica!!!
Dweeb!!!
This guy from Underoath should really just fuck off and die. I’ve been to see his band and they were worse than shite. The guy needs a reality check!COCK!
That is some seriosuly dumb sh*t.
I dont like Metallica but love Kurt Cobain….Kurt Cobain almost single handedly ruined music!
What an arrogant clown he is. Let’s see if his band’s still at the highest level 25 years into their career!!
haha look at you metallica fans getting defensive cos he said he didn’t like them… losers
I really loathe this about music fans in general so what if metallica have sold millions of albums and underoath arent anywhere near them on the selling records side of it all! how many records did that crazy frog tune sell it was top of the charts for weeks! doesnt make it good! grow the fuck up and accept that not everyone has the same taste as you!
wow underoath sure know how 2 get a reaction on these pages
Funny how someone stating an opinion ruffles everyones feathers. I don’t believe a word of it though.
because everyone just loves underoath so much… =/
Well we all have our little problems and oppinions don’t we? I love MetallicA, it’s his choice if he doesn’t.
Didn’t Underoath pull out of a tour last september (that shows commitment to their fans) and nearly split up due to band relationships, if they don’t like each other how could you expect them to like anybody else ?
Who will Underoath take the shit out of next?
Will it be Iron Maiden? Or Maybe Black Sabbath? or Maybe They Will Realise What Fucking Fags They Are And Finally Shut The Fuck Up?
Find Out Next Week on Metal Hammer’s ‘Underoath Talk Shit’.
Fucking Arseholes
This is a test
Hammer…you guys totaly put this on the site to get a reaction didnt you? DIDNT YOU!?!?!?
Hehehehe. It totaly worked though.
C’mon guys, ths is a wee bit different from his dissing A7X the other week. The guy is just stating his own musical opinion. Not everyone loves Metallica (although a great many of us do) He hasnt slaged off the band for no reason as he did with A7X.
Personaly i think he’s talking nonsense that Metallica dont create a feeling with their music, but to him maybe they dont so fair enough. If he wants to be frank and honest about his tastes then thats cool and he has every right to do so, but he is alienating a shitload of potential fans.
Wicked, Cool post – I like it!
OK cool yeh i like it
i was just watching the decline of the western civilisation part ll last night and this sort of american arrogance seems to go hand in hand with nearly all those sceney bands.they all think they are innovator’s but there not, there crap. just like glam, emo is a fashion sense and has about as much musical integrity as a cat running across a piano. thank god somethings don’t change, like plastic scene’s dying on there arse with only there fat , middle aged ,groupies holding on to what liitle youth they have by pretending there shit band still counts.
metallica may be shit now but how anyone in the music buissnes could think they were always shit …………. well nuff said.
lel
Avenged Sevenfold are amazing and have more talent in their little fingers than most bands do in their entire bodies (including crappy Underoath, who are crap live).
They aren’t the first band to wear make up and use false names. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, Avenged are the future of music.
As for his comments about Metallica? He should understand that Metallica are the biggest band that has ever lived. I honestly don’t believe there has been a more important band in the last 30 years. No band will ever top them.
“‘It’s not about your chops, it’s about creating a feeling’ he says. What on earth does that mean?” It means: I can’t play my instrument as well as the other guys, therefore I envy them and gripe about them
P.S. Does anybody else think we should all just stop paying attention whenever Underoath talk? They’re clearly not getting any publicity for their music so they’ve taken to bashing the more successful to try and get publicity by draggin off their coat-tails
They just made thousands of metal fans stop listening to them! Smart move tool ! hahahha I think its funny because for so long its been cool to hate Metallica but it was a faze and he was just a bit late!
Maybe if I was born in 1984, I wouldn’t have a favorite Metallica record, either. Dude was only 6 when they
put our their last good (or first bad, depending on who you ask) record…..but I’m 32….so I don’t have a favorite Sabbath record.
The stupid twats should realise there is such a thing as evolution and that goes for music as well. And I agree with Connor!
just goes to show this band doesnt understand the path of metal
Wtf is up with Underoath?
Just dont understand why they are just slagging bands to get noticed.
Epic fail and Metallica totally own ther ass.
Tell Underoath to come back and moan when they have achieved what Metallica have, despite being good or not.
“Outside, the scorching Italian cooks the tarmac of the empty venue car park.”
What does that even mean? A hot Italian chef prepared some tarmac?
Bezer it means i won’t be eating at his restaurant, MATEY.
I agree with Repka, that Underoath dude can just f*ck off. I never liked them and now I like them even less.
Call yourselves hardcore? Well I’d have to contest to that ’cause your core is not hard.
i get it now underoath are so crap and unpopular tht they have had to petty critiscism towards other bands FUCK UNDEROATH!!!
simply please stop interviewing members from underoath, there just looking for attention, oh look we said metallica sucked so look at us, whats a fuckin twat. Die underoath die!! Asshole.!
Im a fan of Underoath, and i absolutely love Metallica. But Tim McTague is a complete douche. Not just the stuff about not liking Metallica, i mean sure enough, its his opinion, whatever. But theres such a smug feel to what he’s saying. As much as i hate avenged sevenfold, who he bitched out as well, this guy just comes off as a douche. I wonder what next band he’ll decide isn’t up to his standard.
most people on here are just jealous of bands so they slag them off… hes not slagging metallica off.. hes just being an individual and expressing his true opinion. Not arrogance.. you know. metallica is not the only metal band you know
Alot of metallica fanboys here, there’s nothing wrong with being a fanboy, but when someone doesn’t like your band, no matter how famous they are, it doesn’t mean you should bitch at them, he was oviously trying to be respectful. Some of you fans are pathetic though, you got a fucking religion assholes
I’m sorry, I got kindof riled up, I apologize for not being more respectful to you guys. Just understand music is music, and no band is a god. Thanks.
Haha! Great interview Tim! I agree, and I think there is nothing wrong with him expressing his opinion about Metallica. He didn’t say “they suck”, he said “I don’t think their albums are any good.” Note the “I don’t think”… He’s expressing an opinion, people! And what he said is exactly why I love UnderØath: “It’s not about your chops, it’s about creating a feeling.” That line should go down in history for music. So true… Oh, and for those who don’ t know, this basically means: it’s not how well you play technically, it’s about being able to play with emotion and feeling. As far as I’m concerned, Metallica has next to none of that, though I will say that they are good musicians.
Hmmm it turns out that guy from Underoath has posted a blog on Myspace saying some of what is shown above he never actually said and that other bits have been taken out of context.
So b4 y’all start having a go at him, keep that in mind.
Thou Metallica do ROOOOOOCK!
guys Metal Hammer twistes Tim’s words!!!! Read underoath’s blog on their myspace and see what tim really thinks:
I’m writing this in response to my Metal Hammer paraphrasing in a recent online article. There’s obviously a fine line between being honest and careful when it comes to interviews. This is often a very severe impasse for me based on the fact that at times I find myself holding back, rather than just being able to have an open discussion of ideas. If I were to read just what has been posted, not knowing the context of the conversation, I would think the person who said that was one of the most-rude people to ever speak publicly. What was in fact a very well rounded music conversation, turned into a very public bash. Most people who know me know that although I am very opinionated about certain issues, especially regarding music, I have never intentionally or publicly ridiculed any band. What was posted was a collection of just 10 sentences from an entire 30-minute interview in which I stated my personal opinions about certain ideals pertaining to our scene/genre. I’d also like to clarify that some things I am quoted saying were in fact never even said. All things that were indeed stated were said by me alone. The interview was prefaced with the idea that this story was to be about music and only music. Leave your faith and everything else at the door, let’s just talk music. Music is the most powerful, influential force in potentially all of creation. I have seen it change lives before my eyes. Throughout the course of our career we have been confronted with many different issues. Bands go through image changes, ideal changes, and musical changes. This is a natural, and needed progression in order for music and musicians to progress. Whether you are pushing for reformation of anything from gay rights, religious beliefs, straight-edge, animal rights, etc., as an influential community we must take our responsibility for activism and progress as a charge.
I have no ill-will with Avenged Sevenfold, Escape the Fate or Metallica. Underoath just wrapped a tour with E.T.F. and we’ve all grown to like those dudes as a lot. I don’t know anyone from Avenged or Metallica, but I have no doubt they’re all good people.
Regardless of what it was made to look like, I wasn’t intending to start any issues between bands or arbitrarily bash any artists. Many people don’t like my band. To me, this scene is about positivity and making a difference in the world. I want my kids listening to Thursday talk about equality, or P.O.S. talk about injustice, or Thrice talk about getting involved in your local charity.
Tim
Couldnt agree more Creepydude
Maybe he just doesn’t like metallica’s music.
I on one hand do like some metallica stuff so i’m certainly not a one sided underoath fan.
But why don’t you all get over yourselves and respect that someone can voice a preference that they don’t like something without ripping it out of them for not having the same opinion as you??
hahahahahaha I LOVE UNDEROATH and all you wanna b e metal heads are only angry cause its the “metal thing to do” oh lets bash underoath for having an opinion even though this is TIMS interview not the whole band and what tim has to say shouldnt affect what you think of his band which actually have more talent than metallica their lyrics are TRUE strong show emotion and actually stand for something. so why don’t you metal heads with horrible grammar and only know the word “fuck ” and “fag” stop being closed minded pieces of shit and stop bashing someone for having an opinion. :]
http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendId=1943559&blogId=495556575
tim obviously didn’t bash any bands, and metal hammer are obviously just creating headlines by taking the stuff that he said out of context and creating lots of hate.
Interview and quotes taken out of context. Done deliberately as mentioned above to simply elicit a reaction. Tim explains himself on myspace/facebook/whatever.
http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendId=1943559&blogId=495556575
It would help if this rag knew how to conduct an interview. From the sounds of it, the entire article was taken out of context. I swear this rag couldn’t conduct a decent interview if there lives depended on it. According to Tim he never bashed Metallica. Also, you didn’t want him talking about their faith which is what their music is about, it’s just bad interviewing skills. This is why I read a good magazine like A.P. and not trite like this one.
… and another thing, I’m from Iowa, and even I get sick of seeing Slipknot on your cover.
Although Metallica are a group of dicks anyways.
