People need to give HIM a chance instead of automatically assuming that it’s soft music, HIM is metal, I own 18 albums and they are metal.
Ville’s vocals may not seem metal but the lyrics and music are.

I don’t get the angst in the comments. Everyone likes different bands, and opinions about bands are purely subjective. If someone doesn’t like a particular band, that doesn’t make them a bad band. If someone likes a band, that doesn’t make them the world’s greatest band. Genres are generalizations, really don’t mean a thing, or make a band better or worse. Most people listen to music because they like music, and more often than not, they don’t stick to just one genre.

That being said, thank you Metal Hammer for this article. I’m interested in hearing the cd when it comes out now.

HIM are Metal. Just as Black Sabbath were Metal. And if you deny Sabbath as being Metal, you’re denying the band that pretty much so started off Heavy Metal.

Metal is diverse, Stone Sour… althoguh they suck ARE metal. Just not Heavy Metal due to their Hayley Williams style-choruses. Venus Doom was one of the best metal albums I’ve heard, yes they have a few poppy numbers but you don’t NEED a double-kick drummer to play Metal. But then HIM claim to be the softer more sentimental side of metal, and this is nothing but the truth.
No they’re not Metal all the time, but then… name me one Metal band that is, except Slayer xD?

At least Ville Valo’s not walking around thinking he’s a Metal god and all br00tal then pulling out poppy records like some bands we can all name and shame. HIM know where they stand and that’s why their genre is named Love Metal.

Metalhammer doesn’t only put on metal bands! mostly metal but not all!! You’d couldn’t find something better to pick on so you’d decided to pick on what magazine it was put on. If you’d don’t like it then blame the magazine not the band, they are the ones who wanted to hear them and put them on.

the fonz is right. im not a huge HIM fan but they have some excellent songs. People who say they suck DO have closed minds, not because they dont like HIM, but because they have to mouth off. HIM are a good band, which is merely opinion, but apparently a METAL magazine agrees. EVERY band has haters, HIMs no different. I’d say they are gothic rock, their last album being just pure pop-rock. A good genre and band, but I just don’t think they’re metal or could ever be defined as such. IMO metal has to be heavy. Which they’re not.
And Alexisonfire and TCV and stuff are featured because metalheads may like them… surely this article has proved metalheads DON’T really like HIM?

I’m a major HIM fan…They are my all time favorite band forever but they are not metal…I do appreciate and love that Metal Hammer takes the time to feature them in their site and magazine though…HIM isnt metal they arent trying to claim they are. They are different then other bands and genre’s that’s why the “Love Metal” has stuck with them, I have to say though I can’t stand when metal heads are so arrogant and it just proves they are ignorant when they would take the time to be like, “HIM is gay” or “why do they even exist” that’s rude and unecessary. It gives metal fans a bad rep as well. You know what’s worse is when the actual metal bands act just as ignorant. HIM fall under metal if you ask me. they also fall under gothic, rock, hard rock, pop, experimental and even abit of electronic. admittedly they are less metal than the others. ville valo has a massive range and a great voice. i dont realy like HIM that much either, but they’ve got some killer tunes.

OK, the magazine/website may be called Metal Hammer. Does it cover metal exclusively? No. Are Airbourne metal? No. Are AC/DC metal? No. Granted, sometimes even the journalist/editor can be a little cringey (the whole Madina Lake/BrokeNCYDE suck thing is embarassing,) but it covers rock/metal, not just your basic SLAAAAAAYYYYYEEEERRRRR or Metallica.

I don’t really see why the people here are complaining but it isn’t like this page made them stop listening to the new Slyer album for them to listen to this, you people complaining are the one who clicked on here to read about HIM. why would you waste your time to click on an article of a band you hate and to just post a comment that no one really gives much shit about. i will admit HIM isn’t really metal but they have their moments that are quite heavy. I don’t mean Whitechapel, Suffocation, Ingested or Born of Osiris heavy but i know quite a lot of people including me that like this band (that also love the bands i listed above). SO if you don’t like the band don’t waste your time putting hate comments on an article of them. At least the 5 members of this band are in a band that tours around the world. anyway.

First of all, I (if anyone is talking to me specifically) never said there was anything wrong with Hammer covering metal bands. Granted, it annoys me a little to see things like “Slipknot are the biggest metal band on the planet” and such, but I can get over it. A lot of non-metal bands I enjoy get covered, so I’m fine with it.

HIM fall under anything from alternative rock to gothic rock. I like to say alternative to make things simpler, but you can call it what you want. Yes, you can call it metal, but that doesn’t make it metal.

As for the influences thing, so fucking what? Pretty much every rock band under the sun is influenced by Black Sabbath in some way. They may have influences from metal bands, but that still doesn’t make them metal… as you can probably see, a lot of those bands have dark/gothic themes… which you can obviously see in HIM’s music.

Slipknot say they were influenced by KISS, does that make them a classic rock band? Influences don’t define a genre. Influences can be anything from the reason a band starts playing (i.e. “Dimebag made me want to play guitar”) to elements that a band adapts into their own music. In HIM’s case, it’s the gothic themes and imagery, nothing more.

Yeah but I what meant was that USUALLY when a band takes influence from bands before them, they’re bound to incorporate some elements of those bands’ own sound into theirs, granted Slipknot or Rammstein sound nothing like KISS, but the gothic influences from the aforementionned bands are in HIM’s own sound.

A band surely wouldn’t say they were influenced by such and such bands of a specific genre of music, if they didn’t want to take up instruments and play music like that themselves.

First of all, metal isn´t just noise, and heavy sounds as you think, bands that you mentioned as slipknot, rammstein,etc, are just focused on another kind of metal, but it doesn´t mean that if anothes band doesn´t play as them they are not metal. first of all, HIM are love metal, but love metal has something that other kind of metal dont have: they have melody, thing that thrash metal or other metal kinds dont have, im not saying they suck because of that, my point is that metal is not heavy guitars with fast drums. And belive me, i know about metal, just check my name and search who euronymous is so then you could know i´m not only listening HIM and stuff like that. So this discussion won´t get you to absoluetely nothing, cause first you won´t change your mind about him sucks or that they are no metal, and we won´t change our minds about HIM only cause you say it… while fighting you are only proving you are not sure of what you say, oh and one more thing, people that works in metal hammer really know what metal means, dont you think that while writting about metal legends and other bands they won´t learn even a little bit of what metal means?

They’re twice as heavy as these bands, and all the freakin’ Malmsteen’s, Satriani’s, new D Purple and all are pop compared to… Ok, HIM’s latest wasn’t of brilliance, but all the earlier stuff is GAF. Take a listen to their live shows and you’ll see what I mean. If you listen to one TOP40 hit from a band, do you know what they do the rest of the time? C’mon, get a grip! Besides, wtf do you know anyway, you listen to one genre and then you’re god almighty, right? Well fu!

the term “metal” has covered alot of bands in the past such as Black Sabbath, AC/DC and Led Zeppelin. Its why now we have sub genres such as thrash, death etc. So yes him are metal but its difficult to class them as each album is very different, this is why the tongue in cheek “Love Metal” title was used which alot of people took way to seriously.

Alice cooper, KISS is also not metal but they are metal but they are mentioned on metal hammer so HIM has the right to be mentioned as well, trust me i like one metal band and that Rob Zombie i think most metal bands sound the same these days, at least when you get a band him there tracks have diffrent kinds of sound and all people like them really, I remember watching them at download and i saw alot of people i know he love black metal watching HIM and having a great time, this band is awesome live they dont need any support guests becasue they do all the warming up and finishing with a great end. So please leave HIM alone.

I LOVE HIM. I really dislike people how talk badly about others… hey, what makes you write negative comments like that? I don’t go around telling the world I don’t like some types of music or artists. I just keep it to myself. Plus I really don’t care that much whether HIM are metal or not. There is no need to give a name to everything and to reduce our lives to sad classifications.
HIM works for me. I love each and every song. No band has given me the comfort and sweetness they have. I adore their music.

As musicians, HIM have a right to create their own fucking genre. Metal Hammer is not just thrash or old school heavy metal. Just listen to songs like Angel by Judas Priest or Planet Caravan by Black Sabbath or fucking all the 80s metal ballads. They are labeled as METAL, yet in alot of their songs, they dont sound so. Just because HIM does more songs like that doesnt mean they are out of the metal or rock scene.They are genius to try and touch all sounds such as heaviness, poppiness, gothic, radio friendly songs to 10 minute songs. They dont limit themselves musically, unlike most people here. Just because some people dont like a certain artist/genre/band, doesnt mean theyre bad. Just means its not your taste. And if talking shit about them makes you feel better, go for it. It also makes you immature and dumb. That said, HIM is an excellent band. If a metalhead cant even at least appreciate a song fro HIM like Venus Doom, Passion’s Killing Floor, For You, Its All Tears, Sweet Pandemonium, then thats too damn bad… just remember, HIM still has fans. Metal Hammer know that.

Being an American, I’ve really been bored with music the last several years, until I discovered HIM

HIM is a great band with great songs and the only reason they have not been recognized as such, is that they are from Finland.

The media here, is so focused on U.S. and British bands, that they forget the immense talent that coexists in the rest of Europe.

If anyone has really listened to HIM, they would know that Ville is a genius and he has the best musicians backing him up.
