Bring Me The Horizon – ‘Suicide Season – Cut Up’ Track-By-Track Preview

bmth90Bring Me The Horizon have suffered the wrath and ranting of more than their fair share of metal heads, but as this remix album proves, they couldn’t give a fuck less. One of the most bizarre albums of the year…

The Comedown (remixed by RobotSonics)
Massive electro-house and 80s-inspired synth noise like Les Rhythmes Digitales. The odd guitar stab buried in the miasma of electronica and a couple of diced up Oli Sykes vocals. Massive brooding piano middle section. With synths. The BMTH drummer must be like, ‘where’s my bit’.

Chelsea Smile (remixed by KC Blitz)
Plodding-stomping-tempo electronica with Syke’s ‘I know something you don’t know’ screaming low in the mix through plunging rafts of Hadouken/Enter Shikari-esque keyboards and synthesized slap bass. A few acid squelches a la Adam Freeland’s nu skool breaks.

It Was Written In blood (remixed by L’Amour La Morgue)
Half-tempo dubstep style and grinding electronic bass precedes a ragga toasting which explodes into Pendulum-esque drum’n’bass and diced-up screams. All the usual suspects of 00s jungle in the mix from the skippy hi-hats and hand claps to the plunging sub-bass. Sykes’ vocals make interesting MCing… Amazing how grinding down-tuned riffs can sound like happy hardcore when played on a Korg.

Death Breath (remixed by Toxic Avenger)
Hand-clapping down-tempo four-four beats stride over shopped up guitars and flaring syths like hi-pitched rockets leaving an urban area. More guitars than most remixes lend this a grimy feel and Sykes vocals further the synthetic aggression. Like The Clothes Show theme tune in some weird apocalyptic future where we’ve all been uploaded to the internet. By the end it’s a massive whirling sonic storm of digital and analogue.

Football Season Is Over (remixed by After The Night)
Electro-disco of the type men in cheap pleather jacket and white t-shirts dance for 16 hours while off their bean on cut coke. Only this has an Audio Bully’s-esqu bassline and Oli Sykes’ more punky vocals on loop. Unless you’re Herbi Hancock. The odd bit of sampled guitar sounds more at odds with the synthesis than on previous outings. Maybe it’s the bad Daft Punk style vocoder (which is outlawed in most cities). When this tune plays, it’s time to go home.

Sleep With One Eye Open (Tek-One)
By comparison, it’s harder to hear the remixing on this track. It’s metal. Basically it’s not a step towards Goldfrapp, it’s a step towards Lamb Of God’s heavier moments. As if someone found dials marked ‘thrash’, ‘breakdown’, ‘heaviness’, ‘grind’ and turned the fuckers up to 11.

Diamonds Aren’t Forever (remixed By I Haunt Wizards)
This mix sounds like Gallows Frank Carter singing over an Akon instrumental b-side. In fact, this is what BrokeNCYDE wish they sounded like: apocalyp-hip. I’m unsure who will listen to this. It would terrify the Spring Break massive and metalheads would have no idea how to react to tiny Booty drum sounds and effeminate synths tinkling away like pixies running along an electronic xylophone. Bizarrely, still ludicrously dark.

The Sadness Will Never End (remixed by Skrillex aka Sonny)
No fucking about on this one, this is warehouse-sized acid-laden electro house. No fucking about with delicate sonic layers interweaving through a dreamlike soundscape – only the most massive, unyielding and brutal of electro racket here: from the junglistic ‘Amen’ break and serpentine synth riff to the squelching Josh Wink-esque acid-lines and pitch-shift samples of Oli’s voice. Makes Fear Factory sound like New Order.

No Need For Introductions (remixed by Ben Weinman – Dillinger Escape Plan)
As you might expect the Dillinger-ite brings the mental intravenous. Sounding like updated version of Nine Inch Nails’ self-remixes on Fixed this is an erratic and bumpy ride through distant distorted guitar, Aphex drum sequencing and Rolo Tomassi style 8-bit bleeps. Dark harrowing industrial noise that swaps groove and continuity for sheer and unrelenting terror.

Suicide Season (remixed by the Secret Handshake)
More house-tempo 4/4 synth madness with Oli screaming.

Football Season Is Over (remixed by the Utah Saints)
Yes, the guys who stood shoulder to shoulder with The Shamen as every one between the ages of 9 and 45 went to the home counties to rave like loonies on the latest designer drug, ecstasy. As such, this has more than a dollop of The Prodigy in the mix, but the 4/4 beats bring it more firmly back to the 4am double-drop massive. Nice to see the Saints haven’t lost their love of pitch-shifting vocals (see what they did to that Eurythmics tune back in the day!)

Sleep With One Eye Open (remixed by M Shawn Crahan)
Yes, that’s Slipknot’s Clown to you and I. And unsurprisingly it sounds more like a Slipknot tune. Only it’s Oli not Corey.

Chelsea Smile (remixed by Travis McCoy)
Classic heavyweight hiphop break as used by The Wu Tang overlaid with BMTH guitars and Oli screaming, only in between there’s someone giving it the ‘ho-oh, ho-oh’ as if Wylcef Jean tuned up onstage. This is basically someone seeing which old funk/hip hop drums samples sound nice under metal. Nice job on the guitars here, with more of the actual chord progression coming through. As my mum would say, ‘they wrote a nice song, and then they just shouted over it’.

Suicide Season (remixed by Outcry Collective)
Interesting that the UK rock-core newcomers have turned one of the best remixes on the album, sounding more like The Prodigy than The Prodigy. Whooping whirring synths and syncopated drum breaks drive this mix along nicely. The guitars complement the grinding grimy synths and you’re left with a cohesive remix. Although they have used vocoder, tsk.

…..no one gives a fuck about this stupid fucking band so stop advertising them here and leave it to that shitty magazine that always has paramore on the cover kerrrrap

No one fuckin cares about this asshole shitty scene kid band! They probably started off thinking they were doin “screamo” but then they got labelled as Deathcore- which they aren’t. They have caused loads of scene kids to do a band like BMTH, with the fact in their head that they are also doing screamo. BMTH need to go die and stop making this shitty music. THRASH 4 LIFE >_<

I think i’ll definitely enjoy Shawn’s remix the best then :P The After The Night remix of Football season is over is shite

Afraid I have to agree with the comments above. Give the exposure to more deserving bands not this bunch of posers.

I really respect those blokes, they do have some good songs.
And indeed, they don’t give a fuck!

kingOli

I can’t believe you’d publicise this bullshit, I mean it’s not even like it’s a real album! Fucking terrible music, far too over-produced, club-like synth rubbish.
What happened to the Hammer that showed this band the middle finger!?

The QMeister

Seriously MH, what the hell? Last week we had Tokio fuckin Hotel and now this crap!!! Cut the bullshit and get back to metal damn it!

COBHCJQ

go listen to Sleep With One Eye Open, the BMTH version, and dont think about what they look like, cos frankly, that dont mean shit when your in a band.

or

The Sadness Will Never End

both really really awesome metal songs.

I’m interested in listening to this. At least theyre not staying “true” to a genre that sucks ball anyway

Child of the Damned

Oh my god calm the fuck down will ya people!? The magazines just reporting news, the mag ain’t made specifically for you 5 that have commented on this. So calm the F down, plus if you aren’t a fan of the band, why the fuck are you reading it? I’ll admit I’m not a fan myself but I don’t have a fit about it, jesus.

why cover these shit band its metal hamer not shit hammer

COBHCJQ

stop bitchin, the reason they are should be covered in metal hammer is cos their new album is actually really fucking good.

i used to fucking despise BMTH, but i had to admit that some songs on the new album were really good.

metal hammer cover worse bands than BMTH, ie. slayer aha:P

king of heavy metal

cobhcjq are you fucking mental i have listened to this band each time they release something new to see if they ever make anything good and they have always been shit, even when i lived in leeds and they used to support my band they was always booed off and because of olis dad they got somewhere and they fucking suck, and dont diss slayer man they may not be perfect but at least they are metal

King of heavy metal it shows how good your band is if bmth who have now made a name for them self’s and supposedly support your band. You look at the difference now you bitching about them on here to them who are travelling the world having the time of their lives selling millions of records. People just need to look further than their nose and need to open their mind abit just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean its shit. Other people do and before people start calling me a emo/gay or stupid stuff I like I like every type of metal there is out there including bmth. Sorry for the long rant but people are so narrow minded

Bee_Gee

Aren’t BMTH just the Jonas Brothers with body paint?

Stop bitching about BMTH.
No-one bitches about bands you like, so stfu and growthefuckup.

Simple as.

I fuckin loved Suicide Season! quality metal album, remixing them is a bit pointless but they sound allright ;)

Robert Wolf AZ

stop hateing because your fuckin fav band isn’t as good as BMTH is dumbfuck, go hate on someone elses thread you in-mature dicks

Suck it

haha all you guys need to smoke a joint and chill out. it’s just a band doing band stuff lol. no one actually cares what you all think and you should probably get a hair cut, take a shower and grow up

Music scenes change, so Metalhammer have to adapt to a certain extent right?

Theres only so many times you can read reviews of Manson saying something ’shocking’ and some black metal shits from the netherlands ranting and raving about raping and pillaging, or am I wrong? Was the last Killswitch album something new and exciting? Or really, their own kind of subtle remix album.

If you broadened your horizons (mind you don’t trip on that stellar pun) you might manage to see past the image; which, if I’m not mistaken, every band has…Fred Dursts red hat? Slipknots mask and boiler suit combos? anyone? and you might realise that Suicide Season, initially, was a damn fine album if you pay some attention. And that if music, essentialy, is about having fun, a dirty dubstep remix album of a corking metal one, is pretty much the most fun you can have without getting downright disorderly.

As many people above have said above, if you don’t like the band, don’t read the review. It really is that simple.

Jawssshhheeeyyyy

Have only heard, the tek one sleep with one eye open dub remix, it was pretty awesome, the football seasons over was pretty shite, would like to hear the rest, think bmth produced some good tunes, but yeah the band are wankers, doesnt make the music shitt! :)
jawssshhheeeyyy

Yes miley cyrus.

This is all bollocks! I love BMTH!!! Finally a band out there that are out of comfort zone and doing something different! Some of the samples I’ve heard sound awesome. If you don’t like the sound of it don’t fucking buy it and let the MH do their job in promoting it and letting THE FANS!!!! know what is to be expected, anybody who places a comment that is slagging off BMTH is a tosser and really needs to get a life! You should show some respect and see if you can fucking do any better. E-mail me when you’ve got a successful clothing company and 3 albums under your belt! So thanks to anyone who puts something up worth reading and showing support for BMTH everyone else can go get fucked losers!!

Aymzzzzzz

I actually love BMTH:|
And dubstep.
So(L)!
Oli Sykes ftw;D.
Goodbye:)x

yesenia hernandez

stop fucking trashing this band!
who gives a damn if theyre posers or not i LOVE their music! so yall are fucking retarted!
YALL SHOULD GO DIE ON A FUCKING HOLE!
we are who we are you fuckers!
were all fucking different!

Daaaaaaaaaan

Okay,
if you like thrash, chances are your not gonna like bmth.
If You like slayer, chances are you don’t like bmth.
so why bother knowingly navigating to an article about a band you don’t like, just to slate.
i mean having your own opinion is fine,
but don’t express it like “OMFGDOUCHEBAGSCENEKIDPOSERS!” cuz.
A. Imature
B. No one will take you serious anyway.

deathmetal

Well, this album is bullshit. Its not the worst band ever, but I can understand some of the hate. Even they dont deserve all the bullshit, they are not a very good band. But some likes this and some likes that, Id rather put on some Destroyer 666.

i am your poison

there shit are they guys?????
okay whens ur albums due to be released??????????????????

oh yea sorry i forgot NEVER!!!

Colin Haas

i love how all you guys hate but fact of the matter is there not posers. you are there actually making music while your sitting on computer being wannabe critics.

FuryOnIce

You lot can suck my fucking balls, I agree with COBHCJQ, forget what they look like and just listen to them, they kick fucking ass, they’re not screamo, they make your shitty thrash look tame (oh yeah, inB4 emo-scene fanboy, I am a DnB DJ with a shaved head, again, lick my balls), and you’re all probably a shit load more pussy yourself than these guys will ever be. /rant

Club Rat

This shit is some of the dopest electro Ive heard all year, and Ive seen Aoki and MSTRKRFT live this year
But it has no place on this website
BMTH sucks on their own

We should be using this space to force Light This City to get back together

policeforce

all of you guys are Internet Heroes ! Well done !

Krisspics

To introduce myself first and foremost, I’m a fan of metal in all its subdivision.
My favorite bands are Savatage, Morgana Lefay, Death, Megadeth, Ram-Zet, Overkill …
But I must confess that BMTH is one of the few bands that I really do vibrate the last time.
Actually the remix album is … electro and even if it’s better than david guetta is not really musical ecstasy. BUT Their first two albums are great.

You can’t slate the website just because they change who they have on the cover.

You say they’ve had Tokio Hotel and Paramore on?

Well, in my opinion, I dislike both.

But I do like Bring me.

See where i’m going with this?

Everyone has their own tastes.

And no I’m not slating Paramore or Tokio hotel, I just simply don’t like them.

BMTH are technically amazing (ie, fingerwork, double bass, vocals) and that to me is a good band.
