Metal Hammer editor Alexander Milas will be curating a special night for Ja Ja Ja, showcasing some of the finest metal talent Scandinavia has to offer and today, we talk to Sólstafir about what they have to offer the metal world.
What’s the name of your band and when were you formed?
“Sólstafir was formed in January 1995″
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you before?
“I wouldn’t really, and I rarely try to when people ask me. Reviewers seem to have the same problem. But it is a good problem though, as we can truly claim to have our own unique sound. I guess some kind of Post-metal (what ever that is) might give people some idea.”
Are you proud to be put on a bill full of Scandinavian metal talent?
“Of course! It is great to know that we were hand picked by Mr. Milas to appear on this Ja Ja Ja night!”
Is Scandinavian metal in a good place right now?
“We wouldn’t know really, as we are more isolated on our little isle than you are on yours!”
Is there a good community spirit amongst the bands in Scandinavia?
“Sorry, same answer as above. We know just a handful of bands from other Scandinavian countries, but I can’t comment on the scenes in general as we’ve always just been isolated in Iceland.”
What can we expect from your set at Ja Ja Ja?
“Well, we usually end our set with a 30 min version of “Ritual of Fire”! – Don’t expect that! We only have a 30 min playing time. Our songs are quite long, so we’ll go for 3 “short ones”.
What you can expect is epic soundscapes, forged in fire and ice!”
Metal Hammer editor Alexander Milas said the following about Solstafir: “Solstafir blew my mind at the Purple Turtle in London not long ago so I absolutely had to have them in.”
The show will take place at the Lexington on Thursday April 15th from 7pm and will feature a DJ set from Hammer editor Alexander Milas and the Metal Hammer team from 10:15pm. Get full details and tickets here!

Yeah Finnish metal is by far the best, there’s a much larger variety (although there’s particularly good power metal) than many other countries, and lots of amazing bands: Children of Bodom, Nightwish, HIM, Apocalyptica, Hanoi Rocks, Celesty, The Rasmus, Stratovarius, Sonata Arctica… We just need a bit more metalcore bands such as Bring me the Horizon to even it all out
yeah sólstafir rules
