What’s that coming over the hill? It’s Nu Metal!
Did anyone expect the reaction to Limp Bizkit returning would include the percentage of genuine excitement that it has?
I missed the late 90s in metal (Manson, Deftones, bad-Korn, L/Park, L/Bizkit etc.) but was aware of ‘Rollin’ by the B and that tune by Crazytown or someone… So it’s without partiality that I am able to witness the horror and ecstasy of Limp Bizkit’s return.
18 year olds are saying: ‘Fred who? Wes What?’
30 year olds are dry heaving and cursing the era that ‘produced no good metal (bands)’.
But 22-26 year olds are ecstatic.
Things go in cycles. In 1996 who would have put money on Motley Crue making the mammoth comeback they have? Did anyone care about the album that Axl was working on? (well ok, a couple). And who would have thought soft cock rockers Def Leppard would have sold out Wembley Stadium with Whitesnake supporting? Even I didn’t! After grunge all but killed hair metal, hard rock and heavy metal who would have thought hair bands like Poison, Dokken and Warrant would be in demand ever again? Even little NWOBHM bands like Raven and Praying Mantis have ‘returned’.
And so it goes. The era that was as damned, doomed and hated as hair metal looks like it’s going to make a comeback. Just as bands like Disturbed shed the nu-metal-era albatross, so it appears people want it back.
And it’s not limited to the Bizkit either? Papa Roach announcing a tour with Filter was one of Hammer’s biggest news stories this week. And you may have heard that a little band called Linkin Park are headlining Sonisphere alongside Metallica at Knewborth in August. Who would have dared predict that Linkin ‘One Step Closer’ Park would do ANYTHING alongside Metallica.
Here’s my theory: an 18 year olds’ sense of nostalgia is only about school, first kisses and kids TV. But – at 24 – a person is removed enough from his teenage years to avoid feelings of embarrassment as they are no longer that person, they have grown up. Just as many a 30+ year old in a metal band will now admit that they listened to bad hair metal throughout the 80s, so those in their mid-20s are happy to say, ‘…yeah, but they had some tunes!’ about bands like Static X, Staind, Coal Chamber.
Read what Hammer’s Beez had to say about the return of Limp Bizkit.
People said that no matter how cool the 80s became, we could never revive the mullet. They were wrong.
Nu-metal will rise.
Fred and Wes. I salute you.
PS: Can someone give Puddle Of Mudd a bell?

Personally, I cant wait to see Bizkit at Download. And Papa Roach in a month or two. Now, KoRn need to do another GOOD album, like Untouchables or Life is Peachy, and I’ll be happy.
“But 22-26 year olds are ecstatic.”
hahaha, im 24 and think you hit the nail on the head with that one dude.
gill i have to correct on the bad korn in the late 90’s yes follow the leader is shit but issues was arguebly on of the best the only downfall to that album was that it was a little over produced still it could of been worse
“But 22-26 year olds are ecstatic”
I disagree… I’m 23 and I don’t know anyone who cares. I don’t think anyone noticed LB had gone in the first place! Well, good luck to them trying to fill a hole that isn’t there / they couldn’t fill the first time round.
I call on the metal media industry to NOT LET THIS HAPPEN!!!! Please.
It’s obvious that the ecstatic 22-26 year olds are the ones who enjoyed listening to the band back then.
And hell, I’m one of them!!
People need to be more open minded. I love Pain of Salvation, Opeth, Pink Floyd, Dennis Chambers, Weather Report, Necrophagist, Metallica and even Elton John and Yanni. And I still can listen to Limp Bizkit, so what?
If you don’t like it, just keep it to yourself and move on with your life. Geez.
First of all, this wouldn’t be the first time Linkin Park has co-headlined in a festival with Metallica, mind you, this was back in 2004. They’ve been there, done that so it’s not at all unbelievable or surprising.
Another thing, I disagree on your statistics. Perhaps you’re right for some people, but not everyone can be put in a box. Granted, i’m not a metal fan living in the U.S in the 90s or early 2000’s but i loved Linkin Park and i still listen to them even though i’m in my twenties and so do a lot of other peple. Besides, you can’t group LP into a box like nu-metal. It’s very narrow minded.
And who cares if some bands are coming back or not. The so-called genres shouldn’t confine or control how you listen to music. The music should speak for itself if you’re a true lover of music, not what critics tag it as.
Numetal is not metal, its hiphop/poprock
when is metal hammer going to be about metal again? thrash black and death? no slipknot limb bizket and deathstars, that shit is emo
Ugh, wasn’t this crap bad enough the first time? I’ve seen all these shitty bands opening up for far better ones, Manson opening for Sabbath, Bizkit opening for Tool as well as Korn(who were excellent in the 90s, BTW. It wasn’t until this decade that they began to release the same CD again and again).
Oh, don’t like my opinion? Then don’t read it.
“Nu-metal will rise.”
Please God, No.
YES!!!
LET THE NU-METAL RULE ONCE AGAIN!!!
looking forward to it,also looking forward to getting some post-grunge stuff coming back over here too like puddle of mudd *if they do come over here, would be nice though* also on a different note but did mudvayne ever tour the uk? if they did i must have missed them, but i reckon they’d be a kick-ass band to get over here!
I don’t see the point of this “nu metal revival.” People aren’t 12 years old forever, so there’s no point in it, surely?
We are in an age of heavy music were people think playing blast beats and making a song as technical as possible is good music. Theyve always been around but people have latched on to it. Ive seen people go from liking Limp Bizkit to pretending they never did and have bin listening to venom and pantera since they were two years old. I for one want to say that Limp Bizkit have bin one of my favourite bands for 10 years along with in recent times UNEARTH (unlikely combination i know) and have bin waiting for this to happen for a long time
FUCK YEAH!!!….. some more good stuff to listen to
im 19 and remember listening to those bands, so i refute your theory.
but honestly who cares if numetal comes back, ill still be listening to bands like megadeth, mastodon, log, machine head.. just like now im not listening to pop and hip hop and all that mtv shit that goes on 24/7.. my only concern is that metal hammer might start writing articles about the numetal bands, that would suck big time…
limp bizkit are gay
I actually hope that Nu metal does make a comeback this year
Its what listened to throughout my teen years, and I still do!
I’m sick of all the crappy bands floating around the music industry at the moment! Limp Bizkit and Spineshank are back. Looks promising y’all! 2000/01 era forever baby!
Id rather have Nu metal than pop punk and emo any day!
im 21 n very ecstatic! =)
one of the best things i’ve heard for awhile..cuz ive been waiting for this shit to come back. n btw, i group a lotta bands into ‘boxes’. i call a spade a spade. nu metal is metal n if a band like linkin park isnt/wasnt nu metal then it was never a genre to start wit..but it is so..LOVE IT! yay
fuck off. Im 18 and i love nu-metal and have done since the start. and disturbed and linkin park will always be nu metal. fucking “hair metal” is shit grunge nu metal industrial and thrash ftw.
That is really feasible to buy thesis research about this topic at the thesis writing service especially if scholars don’t have time.
